To see the man in the flesh, on his first time at Broadway, performing his autobiographical 700 Sundays, for which he snagged the Tony Award for Special Theatrical Experience, and the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Solo Performance, was worth every dime.
To be in the midst of one man who can command the complete attenion of every single person in every single seat of the Arts Theatre, and make each one laugh wholeheartedly, and tear quietly, was worth more than every dime.
As was his simple, heartfelt message.
To be a part of an instant and prolonged standing ovation, and to see the boy literally jump out of his seat to applaud, put a smile on my face.
And boy, does the man have an impressive wealth of family friends and connections, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, after all.
